Hello!

We have recently moved in and have a staircase down to our new playroom that doesn't feel particularly child-safe today. The distance between the steps (the opening) is 16cm, and from what I understand, it should be at most 10cm from a child safety perspective (?)

We don't let the children play on the stairs, but last week our 3-year-old stumbled and managed to get in a position where she almost fell through the steps with a fall height of 3 meters... It was close enough to feel that we need to secure it!

We thought about attaching some type of molding under the steps to reduce the opening. My first idea was to screw in some molding, but I can only find moldings up to 56mm in width, which would still leave an opening of around 12-13 cm (as we would like to attach the molding slightly further in under the steps for a neater aesthetic).

Has anyone implemented a similar solution? What type of molding did you use? And how did you attach them?

  • White staircase with spaced steps showing gaps; potential child safety concern discussed in user post about reducing opening size between steps.
Rule 34/70 standing approximately 40mm in is usually sufficient.

Do you then fasten with a long screw through the entire rule? Do you put something between the rule and the step to avoid creaking?

Long screw pre-drill and countersink glue in between
