Hello all builder friends!

I'm looking for paneling for my ceiling, as I have high ceilings (over 5 meters), I would like a fairly wide smooth tongue and groove panel (140-170 mm). Does anyone have experience with something similar? I've spoken with various carpenters who believe there could be issues, both with the quality of the paneling (knots and the like) and with shrinkage when it moves (coming out of the tongue and groove?).

I've considered MDF (if there is smooth tongue and groove?) but have a feeling it might look a bit sterile and I would prefer not to have too many seams. Most of the room is about 5 meters in length but in some places almost 9 meters.

So if anyone has installed something similar, please share your experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, it depends a bit on what kind of feel you want for the ceiling. With a plank ceiling, you get more character. MDF is also an okay solution if you have time to paint it with a brush to give it more character; if you use a roller or spray gun, it tends to look rather flat.

One solution to avoid potential shrinkage with a real wooden ceiling is to prime the planks before installation; that way, if there is any shrinkage, it will still look white.

I would go with a real wooden ceiling for a more solid feel; you can sort out the bad pieces. Just make sure to start straight when putting it up to avoid skewing, as you have quite a large area :)
