Casting a slab or "concrete table"

A friend needs a surface for pots etc. in the kitchen. Would it hold to cast a 30mm thick slab (450x600) that can handle hot pots, pans etc.?

Do you need reinforcement? What is suitable to cast with?

Optionally, add a little extra cement if you buy pre-mixed bags of concrete.

Reinforcement is needed, e.g., with fine-mesh reinforcement commonly used in bathroom floors.

What do you polish with after casting if you want a shiny and smooth surface? Lacquer?
