Hi, I'm removing an old carpet from the basement that has a gray "damping" layer underneath. In some places, it's bone dry and crumbles, in others, it's more rubbery and soft. The house was built in '66, the carpet might have been added in the '70s. I've already started tearing it down with a protective mask and will send samples, but I want to see if anyone here knows already?

  • Old carpet being removed from a basement, showing a deteriorating grey underlayer, dry and crumbly in places, possibly from the 1970s.
Asbestos is used as reinforcement/strengthening in glue, sealant, cement boards, etc. Not in soft foam rubber mats.

Okay, thanks! I read in an earlier thread that it could lie as a gray layer in vinyl floors, so I thought it might be similar to this, but then it's probably some other material.
