Hello everyone,

I'm trying to calculate the total height of a fence, which went well until I had to include the top rail. I wasn't a math whiz in school and I haven't gotten any better since! Therefore, I need a little help with what I think is a simple calculation if you just know how to do it.

Seen from the side and in cross-section, the end of the post where the top rail will rest forms a right-angled triangle. I plan to have a 20-degree slope on the top rail, so the final angle will be 70 degrees. The post used is 95x95mm.

How do I proceed to calculate the height of this part?

Thanks in advance!

  • Diagram of a right triangle with 70° and 20° angles, 95mm base, and height to be calculated, drawn on lined paper.

Best answer

95xTan(20)=34.6mm
