Hello,
I'm planning a larger outdoor kitchen construction for the spring. The kitchen will include a countertop approximately 3.5 meters long made of concrete. Under the counter, I want some cabinets with doors. The plan is to build a frame of timber. As for the doors and the rest of the front cladding, I'm considering ordering laser-cut metal, stainless steel, corten, or lacquered.

I'm not particularly skilled when it comes to metal. Nor hinges. Below, I've made a few quick sketches that show roughly how I imagine it could look. However, I have no idea how to solve the hinge issue.

I would like the hinges to be on the inside and as inconspicuous as possible. I'm thinking the attachment to the door could be done with laser-cut holes and neat screw heads on the outside. The other part of the hinge should be able to attach to the frame behind the metal.

Perhaps someone can give some tips on this? Or is it simply a bad idea?

Piano hinge, perhaps?

The thought has crossed my mind. Maybe attach it with stainless rivets.

Do you buy piano hinges in long lengths and cut them yourself, or should you try to find the right length?

The panels are now ordered. They will be made of 3 mm corten steel with somewhat heavier stainless piano hinges. The local blacksmith workshop will cut the panels and weld on the hinges. I will report back with the results later this spring.

Hello! I'm in the process of building an outdoor kitchen myself. I'm very interested in how your kitchen turned out in the end. Please feel free to share pictures and tips.

Hi,
Glad you asked. It turned out really well. We are into the third season, and the solution with doors in Corten was spot on. It gets more beautiful every year.

We have a pergola with a canopy over it in the summer. In the winter, it's completely open and fully covered in snow.

  • Outdoor kitchen with Corten steel cabinets and wooden pergola overlooking a scenic view. Trees and a lake are visible in the background.
  • Outdoor kitchen and seating area with wood and Corten steel elements, overlooking a scenic view with trees and water in the background.
  • Wooden pergola with large wooden doors partially open, revealing two white appliances inside. Ceiling heaters are visible above.
  • Wooden pergola interior with Corten steel panels, including heaters and a closed pergola roof. A wooden door and table are visible.
  • Rusted Corten steel panel beside a white Bosch dishwasher, part of an outdoor counter setup with wooden elements and natural light.
  • Corten steel cabinet doors with a metal handle, part of an outdoor setup under a pergola, with a view of greenery outside.
  • Corten steel outdoor kitchen with counter and stools, overlooking a scenic lakeside view surrounded by greenery and trees.
  • Outdoor kitchen with corten steel cabinets, a stone countertop, and a vase of flowers. A grill and wooden table are nearby, surrounded by green plants.
  • A pergola with a closed awning covers an outdoor seating area with chairs and a table, surrounded by a stone wall and garden plants.
  • A pergola with corten steel panels and chairs on a sandy patio by a forest.
