I hadn't thought much about it before until I needed larger quantities of long construction planks (>= 5m) for a roofing project.

For those of you who haven't considered this, Byggmax doesn't have a fixed selection of wood lengths on the shelves; it varies based on what they receive. Sometimes the longest they have in a certain dimension is 4.2 m, sometimes 5.4 m. All handling is done in running meters, so the store, and thus the customer, can't order any specific lengths, and no one knows which lengths are on the shelf or what is on the way in.

If you need specific lengths, the only way is to go to the store and look on the shelves and return at a later date if what you need isn't available. After hoarding wood for my project over six months, I've started to realize that this isn't a workable system, and I'll have to bite the bullet and order wood from a "real" building supplier.

So I thought we could discuss this and other similar peculiarities with the building supply selection here.

Yep, I've also considered that when building my attefall, in general, they seem to prefer long lengths, i.e., 4.8, 5.4, and short studs at 2.5. Occasionally, they have 3.6 and 4.2 but very rarely. However, it often turns out to be cheaper to cut away the waste than to buy shorter lengths at the more well-stocked lumberyards due to the price difference.

Now I have a Buildmax 5 minutes away, so I occasionally go there to check it out. Same with decking and seeing when a new batch opens. If you're there at the wrong time, it's just a snake's nest of discarded planks.

If you shop at Byggmax, you need to be knowledgeable and observant so you know the quality of the wood you are buying (strength class and grading). If you do just that, it goes well according to my experience. In truth, I think all building supply stores have trouble maintaining good length sorting, which at least can lead to unnecessary waste.

Is byggmax cheap?
Find a local lumberyard that doesn't belong to the big chains.
Present your project and voila, you have an account and 30% discount.
You now get good lumber in the right lengths.
Voila, with minimal waste, it’s cheaper than byggmax.

I should have written that if you compare prices with the same wood qualities, then Byggmax is, in my experience, not cheaper. I completely agree with @kioskdavid. It is better to go to a local building supplier and open an account when starting a project (which does not need to be larger than a shed). Minimizing waste by getting the right lengths is worth a lot of money.

Byggmax is in line with other low-price players, which means almost half the price compared to the "nice" professional dealer on the other side of the street. So at least 30% or better discounts are needed to match. Unfortunately, this is a small town and lumber yards are few unless you're willing to drive several miles to pick up lumber.

The lumber selection is otherwise quite OK, the only issue is the strange way they handle the lengths. It's a fact that the availability of different lengths from the supplier varies, but normally the dealer has a number of lengths they try to keep in stock, and if a certain length is out, you know it's on the way. Byggmax apparently takes what they get - if, for example, 4.8 meters is out of stock, they might put 3-meter pieces in that slot instead, and it can take months before they happen to get another batch of 4.8-meter pieces.

C 24 timber from ByggMax is not inferior to C 24 timber from another retailer. When it comes to cladding boards or decking timber, one must look at the grading. I just compared online the price of 28x120 mm pressure-treated decking between "my" Byggmax store and a nearby XL building supplier that I usually use. ByggMax charges 13 SEK per linear meter for G4-3 graded timber while XL-bygg charges 22 SEK per linear meter for G4-2 graded timber. The quality difference between these gradings is very large. In G4-3, there are edge knots and dry knots. If you want a neat result, there will be much waste. The actual price difference is not that large, and everything takes much longer.

That's for sure. In my case, as mentioned, it's about konstruktionsvirke, and in that case, the lengths are also significantly more critical.

Has anyone tried Byggmax's service "Shop from Home - Pick up in Store"? You're supposed to be able to order online and then pick up your order, pre-packed and ready. Does this mean they pack it on a trailer, which you can usually borrow for free there? I wonder, because then you could go by yourself without having to bring someone to help pick the lumber and load the trailer. I've tried calling Byggmax to ask about this, but they don't have time to answer the phone "due to lack of staff."
