Hello,

We are in the process of decorating our attic. Today, the chimney stack runs up through the attic, and we were thinking of building a wall as a divider around it. The current chimney is plastered, so we'd like to extend it with a plastered wall and later paint/limewash it along with the chimney.

What should be used as a base for this?

* Foam, studs and chicken wire (plaster netting)
* Chipboard and net
* Gypsum net

Suggestions on how to make this wall white?

Best regards,
Jonas

Do not place anything flammable like foam plastic/shavings/studs against the chimney is my advice.

Ok. Stålregel seems good. Even though the chimney is not currently used (geothermal heating), it might be fun to have a fireplace later. However, there are wood shavings against it right now =(

Does plaster adhere to drywall?

My chimney sweep's recommendations were to use only materials that can withstand recurring high temperatures for many years/decades when connecting to the chimney. I recall that there should be at least 15-20 cm of non-combustible and long-term heat-resistant material from inside the flue. Gypsum boards are not recommended as they become brittle(?) from heat after a number of years. What was recommended were steel studs, minerit boards, stone wool, stone material, plaster, and fire-resistant mounting foam.

Bear in mind that even if the stone in the chimney is 15-20 cm thick, the mortar in such a thick chimney can actually crack and form cavities from the flue to the outside of the wall, and then it can easily lead to a house fire if a wooden stud is against the chimney.

To avoid this, like with thermal bridges, one should stagger the joints of the non-combustible layers so that the next layer protects if the joint to the other layer fails.

As for wood chips directly against the chimney, it's not a great idea. I would wrap a layer with at least 45mm of mesh-reinforced stone wool around the chimney where the chips are if you're already up and running on the roof sometime.
