I have removed tiles in the kitchen, and several cm deep plaster clumps came off behind each tile over a larger area. So, it must be built up again to get a nice new tile setting against the rest of the kitchen. What I haven't understood after some searching at building supply stores and online is what type of plaster or mortar I should use? The only thing that explicitly claims to be good under tiles is house fix, but it is an expensive solution as I see it since it requires building up several cm in some places. What else can I use?

The wall is a brick wall built in '46 with some kind of plaster that feels very sandy to the touch now.

Whitish and very sandy sounds like lime plaster? It should probably be a plaster that allows a lot of "movement," perhaps C-plaster or even "looser," (d, e-plaster/mortar?). This given that you can now use cement-based lime plaster to patch up.

One thing is for sure, you probably shouldn't use adhesive to fill the holes, as you said, very expensive. :)

I would probably repair it with something like C-mortar (1 part masonry cement, 7 parts masonry sand), after making sure that you can mix cement-based lime plaster into the current wall.

Take a small piece of the plaster to the hardware store and ask what type of plaster it is and what you should use?
