Building retaining walls seems to be both expensive, heavy, and extensive. Why not build an L-support in pressure-treated wood (NTR/A)? It is supposed to withstand being underground for many years. I'm thinking of a construction of 45x170 studs in an L-shape with a number of braces to reinforce the construction.
