Hello!
I want to build IKEA Metod cabinets into a wall but don't know how to solve the transition from the wall to the cabinet in a good way. I want to set the cabinets so that the doors are flush with the wall and not have trim around the cabinets (smooth transition). See the image below of the previous attic space where the cabinets will go. The new wall with built-in cabinets should align with the plank wall to the right, and the plank wall should be covered with plasterboard. The wall will thus be behind the roof truss supports (or whatever they are called).
An under-construction attic space with wood framing, exposed insulation, scattered wiring, a black bag, a spirit level, and unfinished wood planks on the floor.

Below, I have sketched approximately how I am thinking right now.

Sketch of IKEA cabinets placement in a niche, highlighting timber framing and shelving alignment; planning a plaster finish for a seamless wall transition.
I have sketched planed timber as a frame around the cabinets for a more built-in feel, and they should be flush with the doors and wall. The space between the cabinets should be a shelf.

If I now plasterboard around this, how do I make a good seam between the planed timber and the plasterboard? Is it possible? Or do I need to rethink?

Thanks in advance!

you release the planed wood 3-4 mm outside the gypsum so you have room for some filler and possibly wallpaper

Sounds good. Do I need to use something special for the joint? I read somewhere that microlit was good, but is fiberglass tape enough?

Now it has been finished for a while :) But here is the result anyway.

White built-in drawers and door on a floral wallpapered wall, with light wooden flooring and ladder.

I have done similar for some closets and cabinets in my house. They go flush with the wall and more or less blend into the wall. I have used corner protectors for plaster. Then filler and paint. A bit of softfox too if desired. Mounted the cabinets behind the finished wall corresponding to the door's thickness.

I get to share since my project that just got finished.
I've decided to place my bureau about 5mm outside the wall and sealed around it with soft sealant.
(The sealant is not in place in the picture)

  • A cabinet positioned slightly away from the wall, with a vacuum cleaner on the floor in front, no caulking visible around the cabinet.
  • Chest of drawers slightly protruding from the wall, with an unfinished seal and wooden floor in a dimly lit room.
