Hello,

I'm going to build an interior wall and have a few questions I hope to get help with.

I want some sound insulation in the wall as it is intended to be right above a staircase where the sound from our lower floor travels quite well. The room is partly used as an office but also intended as a guest room.

1. I plan to use 45x95 studs in the floor and ceiling. I've read that an easy trick to get reasonably soundproof walls is to place the vertical studs "zigzag." If I also use 45x95 studs here, do I attach them with the 45-side in line with the floor and ceiling stud? Vaguely described perhaps, but I hope someone understands my question.

2. What type of insulation is best suited for an interior wall that is to be soundproofed?

3. Thinking OSB + drywall on the outside. How thick should these be?

4. Then I will also be installing a door and, for light to come down to the stairwell, I want a window beside the door. For cost reasons, I can't spend money on a soundproof door window or a massive soundproof triple-glazed window, so I'm looking for second-hand and older styles. I realize this might be a weak point when it comes to the actual soundproofing. Anyone have tips for other solutions?

Thanks!
