I am planning to install a new staircase in the upcoming kitchen. The staircase needs to be straight. But I'm not quite sure what angle it can have. It's important that the staircase is comfortable to walk on. We have a floor-to-floor measurement of 330 cm. I prefer not to make a larger hole than 250 cm in the ceiling as the staircase will intrude too much into the kitchen. It should be about 100 cm wide.

What is the most common angle when building a long straight staircase?

What height should the steps be?

What depth should the steps be?

How big a hole do I need to make?

Grateful for any advice!

You don't stand a chance of managing that staircase with a 250 cm stairwell if it's going to be comfortable, unfortunately. :(

This is approximately how you dimension according to ancient rules (which can also be discussed *):
For normal stepping rhythm, a suitable dimensioning of indoor stairs is obtained from the formula

2h + d = 610 - 630 mm,

where h is the step height and d is its depth. For outdoor stairs, the number that the formula gives can be larger, but not over 660 mm.

Stairs connecting one living room with another h <= 190 d >= 250
Indoor stairs in other actual utility spaces h <= 180 d >= 270

(fresh copy & paste (+ modified) from member Strixx :))

So your stair would preferably be at least 17 steps high, and thus a step height of 194.
step depth = 610-2*194 = 222.
16 * 222 = 3.55 meters stairwell. And this staircase will certainly be perceived as steep and difficult to walk on, one more step and slightly deeper treads wouldn't hurt.

Here is a calculator: http://www.blocklayer.com/Stairs/ It is usually about two riser heights + one tread depth = 60-65 cm. The treads must be at least 25 cm wide, preferably more. With such a large height and short opening, you probably need an angled or U staircase; otherwise, it will be too steep. If you have such a high ceiling, maybe you can have one or two steps "before" the opening, or does that make it protrude too much into the room?

Thank you for the answers, I will have to reconsider. I will never be able to fit the staircase in the kitchen.
