Hello,

This summer, I plan to build a staircase at my parents' house. The staircase will lead up a partially steep hill. Their house is on the lower part of the property, and about 10 meters behind the house, the hill rises steeply about 5-6 meters. After that, it is relatively flat and the hill rises about 1 meter in height over a distance of 3-4 meters.

Once on top of the hill, there is a fantastic view.

My question is really about how to go about building such a staircase.
  • Slope of the stairs. Can it be inclined in any way or are there certain standards?
  • Dimensions vs. slope. That is, how deep/wide/high should the steps be, and are these dimensions directly related to the slope?
  • Distance between the footings?
  • Dimension of the timber depending on the height and slope?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,
K

It is possible to build stairs at almost any angle, but if they are too shallow, they can feel strange to walk on, and it might be better to create a landing and then continue with stairs. There is also a limit in steepness when the step height is more than 20-22 cm, as it becomes uncomfortable to walk down, and it is then technically called a ladder.

For a staircase to be comfortable, there are various rules of thumb. A common one is that 2 times the step height + 1 step length should be between 560-650 mm.

In your case, if you make the stringers of 45x220, it will suffice to have footings at the ends.
My recommendation is also to make the treads out of 45mm thick material, as thinner can become springy after a while.
