Hello everyone, I could really use some help as an extremely DIY-enthusiastic amateur who hasn't done more than butter knives in woodshop a hundred years ago. I'm in the process of renovating the staircase and have now enclosed it, on the side marked in red a wall and railing will be built, kind of integrated into the wall. I'm considering enclosing it and putting up a door, but that depends on how difficult it is. Now to the question, is it possible to use just MDF or should I perhaps use masonite or just gypsum? It will be painted afterward. I won't be putting shelves and stuff on the wall later. Grateful for tips. A staircase renovation in progress with a vacuum cleaner on the floor and a red line marking where a wall and railing will be built.

By the way, I can really recommend bombing the risers to reduce creaking from the stairs. Yours look like they might be cracking.

What is that? The staircase creaks a bit now, but it did before too. It depends a bit on how much the person walking on it weighs.

To bomb something is to make it convex. That is, to give the riser a slight rounding at the top so that it only contacts the tread above at one point. This prevents the wooden parts from sliding against each other and reduces creaking.
