Build an additional living floor on an adjoining garage

Hello.

I have an attached garage from '65 with the dimensions 4x8m on one level. It is positioned with the longest side along the short side of our house. The house is a two-story without a basement from the '50s. Exterior walls made of hollow blocks at ground level. Concrete slab (ERGE). Upper floor made of wood. I'm exploring options to expand our living space and I hope someone might provide insights on whether it's worth proceeding with the following idea: To build an additional floor on the garage and connect it to the house's upper floor.

Attached is a section of the garage. Unfortunately, I don't have a floor plan, but three exterior walls form the garage together with one gable wall of the house. No other load-bearing parts within the garage.



The garage is founded on hard clay. There are minor settlement cracks in the exterior wall.

I am exploring options to expand our living space and hope someone might provide insights if it is worth pursuing the following idea: To build on top of the garage with a floor and connect it to the house's upper floor.

I have very similar conditions and the same thoughts about building upwards. Did you move forward?

Hello Tobias. No, we didn’t proceed, we had this as one of several options to expand the living area but eventually concluded that we can manage with the square meters we already have. Wish you luck in your project!
