I bought a house that has a staircase between the floors that's completely worn out. The plan is to build a new staircase. The only thing I really care about is that it shouldn't creak, ever. So what is the best way to build it in that case? It's an L-shaped staircase if that matters.

Metal?

Maybe best, but I want to make it in wood. The steps embedded in the stringers probably present a greater risk of creaking than sawing and placing them on top?

I don't think it's possible to build a completely creak-free wooden staircase. You're looking for concrete here.

Or oversize like crazy...
Also believe in steel... but I'm curious how a staircase is completely done for...
Mine stopped creaking when I aligned and drove in a bunch of screws

The whole staircase moves when you walk on it, it's been there since the early 1900s so the steps have become scooped where you place your feet. In addition, the steps have different depths and heights, so I'll go crazy walking on it.
Over-dimensioning sounded interesting, how strong are you thinking?

I have only built small staircases, so I cannot answer that.. but measure, draw, and think about what fits... And upgrade the material..

Dream of having a squeak-free staircase. Ours creaks and squeaks if you walk in the middle of the stairs, maybe it would disappear with a small brace along the underside of the step to stabilize it. Haven't done it, but it feels like it would help.

It should be if you screw glue and oversize everything and basically have it freestanding (so it doesn't have to move with the house's movements) but it won't be an easy task to build..
