We are in the process of a complete renovation of our house built in 1965 and are soon approaching the part of the house where the original bathroom is.

Due to water damage, I've had contractors at home who have demolished part of the bathroom, and they suspect that there is blåbetong in the walls. All other interior walls are wooden, but around the bathroom it's built with masonry.

We will also be renovating the adjoining rooms (kitchen, bedroom, and hallway) so the question is if we should take the opportunity to demolish the masonry and rebuild with a wooden frame?

The contractor says it doesn't matter if it's blåbetong and that it's quite a bit of work to replace it (demolishing, supporting, building, etc.).

What do you think?

The bathroom is 2*1.6 m.

If you have good ventilation, there's no danger, just a lot of work to remodel. If you're worried, you can measure the radon levels in the house to see if it's at a dangerous level.

I would probably choose to tear it out even if it's probably not a health risk, because it's foolish to take chances. It could also be positive for the value of the house if it's removed.

The more built-in it is, the less exposure. Towards wet rooms, there should be zero leakage (of radon). On the other side, plastered or gypsum-clad and painted/wallpapered, there shouldn't be any significant danger either. Extra tight paint/wallpaper helps.

The house belonging to my mom and dad has a basement foundation (including all the basement's interior walls) made of blåbetong. The blåbetong stone is plastered and painted. When they measured the radon level, I believe it was borderline in the basement (200 Bq?). It was enough to install exhaust ventilation, and it decreased significantly.

What will you replace it with?
If I had the choice of blåbetong, which is insensitive to moisture, and a wood, plaster, OSB construction, I would choose blåbetong any day of the week.
