I'm renovating my upstairs.
In one of the rooms, there's a chimney breast and there used to be a tile stove that unfortunately is gone.
When the tile stove was removed, something that looks like an altar was built, and I'm in the process of removing it.
There are two sturdy beams (about 150x150) against the chimney breast from floor to ceiling, and I'm wondering if they might be load-bearing in some way, or if they are just part of the altar.

Yes, a picture is probably necessary if any answer other than a guess is to be made.
But until then, I guess the following, yes they are load-bearing because it seems ridiculously over-dimensioned to place 2 150x150 to be able to build an altar. Probably they found something behind the tiled stove that had to be concealed, hence the altar.
Or perhaps religious people lived there before you who wanted a sturdy and durable altar, that could be the case too.
