Hi, I have a 1.5-story brick house that is 7.20 m on the long side (exterior wall). I am considering opening up about 5.5 meters because I want to extend. Which beam can support that weight?

  • Blueprint of a 1.5-story brick house layout with handwritten notes, focusing on a 5.5-meter opening for expansion, marked in red lines.
  • Floor plan of a 1.5-story brick house showing layout with kitchen, hallway, bathroom, and a red line indicating a potential 5.5-meter beam installation.
  • Blueprint of a 1.5-story brick house showing side elevation with roof details, measurements, and notes for potential extension plans.
More information is needed to calculate something like that. Measurements of the entire house, measurements for bearing supports, number of floors, snow load zone, etc. I would guess a steel beam if there should be an opening without a central pillar. Otherwise, it will be an insanely large glulam beam. Contacting a structural engineer is my advice.
