Hello!
I have a house built in 1955, with a basement that has plastered walls on the inside. What material is the basement likely built of and how do I best attach shelves to the interior walls?

My house from '52 has exterior walls made of concrete blocks. Dyonite panels (träullit) with plaster on the inside. Interior walls are cast in place. If your basement is similar, you must have fairly long screws if shelves are to be mounted on the exterior walls. You must "get past" the träullit panels if you want to attach shelves. I usually use either screws/anchors or concrete screws. On interior walls, you can use shorter screws since you don't need to go through any träullit layer. /LOB

What screws for interior walls?

If you don't have drawings of your house, get new ones from your municipal building permit office. There are different ways to build, and without them it's just pure guesswork here. A drawing and technical description are gold.

My guess is that the basement is built with concrete blocks with plaster on the inside.

The simplest way without drawings is to simply drill a hole and you'll notice what it's built of.

I agree with JAsnabbe, but I use these screws if I'm going to hang something really heavy. Concrete screws, flat and dome head, zinc-plated with prices; options for heavy-duty projects.

Otherwise, a regular screw and plug. I start with a small drill and then the "right" dimension. Unfortunately, in my basement, they've used both sparsten and reinforced quite densely, so drilling THROUGH the wall is a real lottery.....
