Planning to build a balcony. I'm thinking of using 90*90 posts and a 90*225 glulam beam as the main beam. The span will be between 3500-4000 on the main beam.

When building something like a deck, it's nice to use the posts as railing posts, but when it comes to glulam, it seems most appropriate to create the support as I’ve drawn in the attached sketch, i.e., use the maximum available support surface.

I will then need to attach separate posts for the railing. For example, I could attach a 90*90 in the angle between the main beam and joist.

Or should I extend the drawn 22*95 so it goes all the way up and is part of a railing post constructed of 22*95 + 45*95 + 22*95?
What's the best way to do this? It's silly to buy a few extra meters of glulam only to cut and burn it off.

  • Drawing of a wooden beam structure with measurements: 90x225 and 90x90 glulam beams, labeled with "22x95 or similar" for potential railing attachment.
