The bottom batten on a roof.. Should it be nailed through both the eaves flashing and the sheathing/roof rafter?

It feels a bit weak to just attach it to the counter-batten?

The tiles just sit on it, they're hanging on other battens further up, so it doesn't need to be fastened any extra.

It's not tiles but straight corrugated sheet metal. I'm afraid the wind can get under the metal and tear it apart if it's not tightly secured. Do I need to consider this?

Nail it down into the rafter with four-inch nails

Exactly... furthermore, every other counter batten should lie on the roof trusses...
