Hello, if you are going to attach an awning to a 15.5 cm wide (~40 cm high) concrete beam, which fastening would you go for? It's quite a heavy awning - 6m long - so you want good tensile strength for straight down pull + movement in all directions due to downward weight, gusts of wind, etc. The neighbor's is attached with regular plug + screw and has held up well for a couple of years, so that seems to work well, but I have seen recommendations for more solid fastening for large awnings.

Expansion bolts seem like a good solution but could the expansion forces be a problem in a 15.5 cm wide concrete beam..?

Chemical anchors/anchor mass seem incredibly strong, but maybe tricky to first attach upwards in the ceiling (i.e. hold threaded rod in place during curing) and secondly to get a proper grip when you haven't done it before..?

I will upload an image of the beam as seen from inside the house as well.

What do you think?

  • Concrete beam viewed from inside, supporting ceiling panels with a light fixture attached; context of securing heavy awning.
Run 100mm expansion bolt and chemical anchor

Expansion bolts usually have a strong grip, so go for that! Chemical anchors shouldn't be necessary, but you can certainly supplement with them if you like.

How many screws should it be attached with?
There's a difference if it's 2 or 20.
Maybe one should be careful not to drill through the reinforcing bars in the beam, what is the beam supporting?

Thanks for the answers! I have now bought 10x100mm expansion bolts. There are 4 brackets, each with two holes. BUT, the holes are too far apart to fit on the beam, so I thought I'd do like my neighbor and screw in some furring strips on the inside to widen it and place one of the holes in them (with 10x100 French wood screws). So - only 4 holes underneath on the beam, and 8 more on the inside of it a little further up.
It can also be mentioned that my neighbor's has 5 brackets, but with plugs and screws as mentioned.

Good thought regarding the reinforcing bars, I might be able to adjust/make the holes 1cm to avoid them if needed. The beam supports the balcony on the upper floor.

By the way, I forgot to mention that it's a townhouse, which means the neighbor I mentioned has identical conditions :)
