How should you attach the vapor barrier to the stud closest to the existing wall when building a new wall? Can't moisture seep between the stud and the wall?

What is the purpose of a barrier if it still gets holes in it when you hang something on the wall?

It sounds like you are building an interior wall. You shouldn't have a vapor barrier there.
