Hello. I have a house built in '58 where both the ceiling and interior walls are made of a masonite/board material. I've googled and found that it's Tretex. I'm going to install a ceiling consisting of panel boards in 10mm MDF. Since these don't weigh as much as wood panels, can I manage to attach them directly to the ceiling, or do I need to install joists first?
Tretex is soft and fragile so I wouldn't dare to attach the ceiling solely to it. What is behind the tretex? Can you screw/nail straight through and attach to the material behind? Otherwise, it might be best to take down the tretex.
I had the same in a house, and eagerly I placed porous boards underneath and nailed with side clips and nails that came with it. I thought they held well. Everything was fine, very pleased, but then six months later I woke up to a crash. Half the ceiling had fallen down, I investigated, the nails were too short, they had only reached the surface layer with the tip. So another round of getting it in order, I gathered everything and bought longer nails that went a bit into the surface layer. But it meant buying more boards.
