I'm as ignorant as heck and need some help.

I have some brackets for shelves that need to go up on a drywall. I've tried using rawlplugs but the screw won't reach the screw part of the plug, so it's not getting a grip. This is because the bracket takes up a large part of the screw's length.

What should I do? Are there any special plugs that attach directly at the opening and don't have the screw grip at the end?

I've tried looking for longer screws for the plugs but can't find any longer than 6cm?

Help is gratefully accepted so I can avoid the shame of not even managing to put up some shelves.

There are certainly screws longer than 6 cm. What is the diameter?

what kind of plug do you use?

Get a longer screw, there are screws that are half a meter long :)
The screw should go through the entire plug + a little more, about 1cm extra.

S
should be molly or plastic plug forming a knot on the backside gypsum

Is it a molly plug? Tighten the screw, without the bracket, first so the plug folds on the backside of the plasterboard, then unscrew the screw and mount the bracket. Then maybe the screw will be long enough? This is best done with a molly plug pliers (http://www.biltema.se/sv/Bygg/Fastelement/Skruvankare/Tang-for-skruvankare-87500/). In a pinch, simply tightening the screw with the plug as a stop can work, but there's a risk the plug will start rotating in the hole then.

The plug I'm trying to use is a Molly plaster plug that screws/expands itself inside the wall.

What I need, if I understand you correctly, is another screw that fits into the plug but is a bit longer to also go through the bracket and reach all the way into the plug. Which screw can I use? Attaching a picture of the plug I'm using.

  • Packaging image of a nylon Molly plug with demonstration of its self-expanding mechanism inside a wall, including specifications and weight capacity.

What type of bracket are you going to mount?

The choice of screw (or rather screw head) depends on the bracket, then you should have a 5mm thick screw that goes through bracket+drywall+plug+10mm (minimum).

The console is like this: LargeImageViewer.aspx

  • A wooden wall-mounted shelf bracket with a triangular support structure.
Buy wood screws with a countersunk head, like these: http://www.byggmax.com/se-sv/prod/pid-24959
They are also available in 20-pack at Biltema, or at any hardware store, you'll probably find a bag of 10 or 20 pieces at Ica Maxi too :)

Thanks for all the help! Thanks to YOU, a very stylish set of shelves is now hanging on the wall. Many thanks, it's amazing how kind people on a forum can spread joy in everyday life!
