Ignorant and eager, tore up a carpet and now wondering if this could be asbestos? Grateful for an answer.

  • A partially removed carpet in a room with tools and debris scattered on the floor, raising concerns about possible asbestos.
  • Fragmented flooring material possibly containing asbestos.
  • Close-up of a hand holding a piece of torn carpet with white adhesive material, possibly containing asbestos.
Very unlikely to be asbestos. Asbestos and asbestos-related products (e.g., eternit) typically only appeared in connection with fire insulation and as roofing material.

But also in floor adhesive, filler, grout, etc., right...

Asbestos-reinforced glue, known as svartlim, is usually black in color. Difficult to say exactly from the pictures, but the dark gray appears to be the bottom layer of the actual carpet.

Yes, you can probably never be completely sure. It's probably best to take a sample to the municipal environmental office or whatever it's called where you are. The age of the carpets, etc., also gives a certain indication. In Sweden, asbestos was banned in 1982.
