I intend to renew the ventilation in the attic of our 100+ year old house. Before I proceed, I'd like to know if there's anything hazardous up there. Mainly asbestos, I'm particularly concerned about the bags with insulation. The insulation in the bags looks like regular fiberglass. Not surprisingly, it produces a terrible amount of dust when moving in the "area."
All advice is appreciated, asbestos is the most important, but feel free to comment on the general condition as well.
+100 years it should not be very likely with insulation, but you never know. If the wool is completely white and looks more like a skein of yarn, it is asbestos but a very low percentage of asbestos in that stuff. Feel free to attach a close-up photo of a piece of insulation and I can tell you with 99.9% certainty if it is or not. Unfortunately, lab tests for it are very expensive.
Thank you for your reassuring response, the insulation simply looks like ordinary fibreglass and is yellow and definitely doesn't look like any yarn skein. I'll try to come up with a picture over the weekend.
The insulation is most likely not 100 years old. Being exposed to asbestos for a short period isn't dangerous if you are otherwise healthy. But you should have a mask and disposable overalls (you should wear them anyway considering how dusty it looks).
The attic looks fine, why do you want to change the ventilation?
There are certain areas that are significantly worn on the rafters that are not immediately visible in the pictures above. A major renovation has taken place on the upper floor, so I am a bit concerned that the indoor climate has changed. Among other things, vents have been installed in all rooms, and a pax fan is venting moist bathroom air through an eternity tube that passes through the attic. Additionally, I have drilled holes on the short sides following an inspector's recommendation. However, when I later spoke with Anticimex, they said that the holes were completely wrong and should be sealed.
- Impossible to get it right...
Therefore, I try to keep an eye on the development up there to some extent.
I wouldn't listen to AC....
But don't worry about asbestos.... the fear of asbestos is more dangerous than asbestos itself....
But considering how it looked up in the attic, I would still use a mask... It's not so healthy to inhale a lot of dust whether it contains asbestos or not...
