Hi! Renovating a house built in '78 but with a smaller part from the '60s. Today I removed the carpet in the basement, where under the carpet there was tar paper, then a plastic cover, and at the bottom a black paper glued down. It was very damp, and under the black paper it looks like there's black "glue." See attached pictures. Could this be asbestos? Or possibly mold since it was so damp?

  • Close-up of a black adhesive layer on a basement floor after removing a carpet, with visible moisture and debris around it.
  • Close-up of peeled black paper under floor mat, showing moisture and black adhesive in a basement from a '78 house renovation. Possible asbestos or mold concern.
