Living in a relatively new house (2 years). We find the stairs still quite slippery, both my mom and I have slipped. We're expecting a baby around Christmas, and my wife is a bit worried about going up/down with the little one.

I've tried looking into ways to make the stairs less slippery, and the options I've found are carpet, anti-slip tape, or painting with a mixture of clear varnish with anti-slip sand.

Carpet is ruled out by my wife for aesthetic reasons; she wants something that is as invisible as possible.

Is there any way to perhaps just "roughen up" the existing surface?

Would appreciate feedback from anyone with experience.

Is the staircase lacquered, painted, or oiled?

Lacquered

If it's an issue you're describing, I would try mixing anti-slip powder into the varnish and varnishing the steps.

If it's just a little slippery, using matte varnish might be enough.

Borrowing the thread, I have the same question but on a painted white staircase. We don't want it to become discolored or bumpy (which seems to happen with various anti-slip solutions like sprays and strips). Does hard wax oil with anti-slip work on painted surfaces? How does it look? Does the oil cause discoloration?

I don't think it's a good idea to use hard wax oil on a painted surface. I wouldn't even try.

Ok, that was clear :-). Why not? Better to repaint the stairs with some anti-slip paint? However, I'm worried about ending up with a bumpy surface (ugly). Any thoughts on that?
