Hello,

I have previously used some MS polymer from both Tec7 and Biltema. However, it smells quite strong and even when I use a mask with an A1 filter, I feel it in my airways for the rest of the day.

Is there any other milder sealing and adhesive compound to use with less odor/gas but still holds well?

In this particular case, it will be used to glue a clean-out manhole cover (recently painted) in the basement to stop radon leakage.

Metal hatch lid on a concrete basement floor, secured with sealant to prevent radon leakage.

What do you think about Illbruck SP054 Adhesive & Construction Sealant? It does say that you should use an AX filter in case of poor ventilation, so I assume that means A1 or A2.

It feels like it's about the same thing but I didn't read very carefully...

Won't you want to be able to lift the lid at a later stage? Silicone without vinegar doesn't smell much and can be dismantled fairly easily. Can't be painted on and doesn't stick quite as hard but might work?

I think the products are quite similar, though I get the impression that SP054 is a bit weaker, a bit more sensitive to where it is applied.

The cleaning well will probably need to be opened sometime in the future, but then I imagine breaking it open and then applying new glue to attach and seal it again. The alternative would have been to use a rubber gasket and screw it in, but that would probably require threading holes for the attachment, which I am unsure about doing.

As mentioned, silicone probably works well here. But a rubber strip on the inside is more elegant. Can't you manage with self-adhesive? If you need a frame under the hatch, it might be attached with glue.

You can also use silicone as a strip, but it's a bit trickier.

Open the hatch, apply a substantial bead of silicone. Then thoroughly apply a release agent to the hatch, place it in position, and remove the excess silicone. If everything has gone correctly, the silicone has shaped itself to the gap, adhered to the frame but not to the hatch, which can now be opened after it has cured.

Unfortunately, he used Tec7 but when it needs to be redone next time I will probably look at another solution. Maybe I should pull myself together and learn how to thread the insert, put some kind of rubber gasket and then screw the lid on, that would have been the neatest solution.
