Since stainless steel railings are so incredibly expensive, I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that look roughly the same, that is, look like "metal."

For example, is it possible to use regular square tubes (in steel) and weld them together into something and then paint with anti-rust paint?

Galvanized maybe? They are available ready to buy.

Cold galvanizing in a can and painting might work

Aluminum isn't too expensive, is it? But maybe it's the wrong "color". A colleague has it on their deck railing.

If we disregard the requirement for it to look like metal, but still want it to be maintenance-free, does anyone have more suggestions? As someone who builds in stone, I sometimes fantasize about maybe being able to build or cast a nice railing! :)

I remember a documentary on Discovery about a train station in France where everything, and I mean everything, was made of concrete - they had super stylish organically shaped concrete railings... :)

Is it possible to work with aluminum on your own, or do you need to hire companies that are experts in it?

Depends on what you mean by work. Welding should probably be avoided if you want to keep the coating when using anodized aluminum.

Milkshaken
Paint with Hammarlack otherwise... available in such colors now...
