Alternatives to stainless railings outdoors?
Since stainless steel railings are so incredibly expensive, I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that look roughly the same, that is, look like "metal."
For example, is it possible to use regular square tubes (in steel) and weld them together into something and then paint with anti-rust paint?

Aluminum isn't too expensive, is it? But maybe it's the wrong "color". A colleague has it on their deck railing.
If we disregard the requirement for it to look like metal, but still want it to be maintenance-free, does anyone have more suggestions? As someone who builds in stone, I sometimes fantasize about maybe being able to build or cast a nice railing!
I remember a documentary on Discovery about a train station in France where everything, and I mean everything, was made of concrete - they had super stylish organically shaped concrete railings...

Depends on what you mean by work. Welding should probably be avoided if you want to keep the coating when using anodized aluminum.
