Hello,

I'm going to attempt building a custom cabinet (cleaning cabinet/wardrobe) in a small room in my apartment and would need some advice regarding the approach. I've never tried anything like this before, but I'm quite handy and enjoy planning and executing projects like this. Below, you can see a picture/sketch I've made of approximately how I want it to look, just so you understand what I'm talking about. It will be built in painted MDF/plywood with possibly some details in hardwood.

My first thought was to build the cabinet separately and then place it on joists on the floor, where the joists are the same height as the skirting board (not in the picture) so that the skirting can run around the wardrobe for a "built-in feel." But how do you handle the ceiling to achieve the feeling that it goes all the way up? Will it look good if there is a few millimeters gap between the ceiling and the top of the cabinet? This will also mean that the doors will go all the way up to the ceiling. Should a joist be placed in the ceiling as well, so that the cabinet comes down 5 cm?

I will need to attach joists on the right side of the cabinet to support a desk (and shelves), as seen in the picture. Is this a factor that needs to be considered in how the cabinet is built?

I can't find much useful information when I search for similar projects on Google. I would be very grateful for all sorts of advice and links to similar projects or books on the subject (the more details, the better).

Thank you in advance!
