Need help rebuilding the wall where we had a leak. Very grateful for tips and advice.

Trim the edges of the hole straighter to begin with. Then cut a piece of gypsum that fits the hole, then drill holes for your pipes. Next, split the piece lengthwise straight through your holes.
Screw plywood strips around all edges where you don't have a stud and also in the middle where you make your joint. Screw the board in place, spackle, and paint.
