I am in the process of building a type of hall furniture for the children to have in our basement utility entrance. Despite good moisture conditions and not mounting against an outer wall, I am keen on not having too much timber right up against the wall. I am attaching my basic drawing.
The setup consists of three sections with partition walls in between. Two upper shelves, with hooks for outerwear fastened on the underside of the lower one. Then a seating bench, and underneath this, two shoe shelves. The dashed horizontal markings are where I envision 45x45 battens fastened to the wall. The plan is to let the upper shelves and the seating bench rest on battens at the back. At the front, the question is whether the shelves should rest on angle irons attached to the partition walls or if I should place a small strip on the partition walls for them to rest on. I think the latter option sounds the best.
My questions:
1. Can any wooden strip work just as well as angle irons to support the shelves?
2. Material selection. I am considering laminated wood panels for the seating bench and MDF or possibly plywood for the rest. Is one of them preferable? What thickness of the board?
3. Has anyone built something similar and would like to share a sketch?
