Hello everyone!
I am building a bike shed and found a box of screws left by the previous homeowner. The packaging says "outdoor use" but they are yellow chromate-plated screws... Are they really good screws for outdoor use?

Grateful for answers!

  • Green box of yellow chromated outdoor screws, labeled "CUTTERS," containing 250 pieces, size 4.2x42mm, article number 559542 by ESSVE.
Your question does not have a straightforward answer. It depends, among other things, on where you live, what you are attaching with the screw, and whether you plan to paint over the screw heads afterward. If you are screwing up wall panels that will be painted afterward, they are suitable in most places. Generally, the closer you live to the coast, the higher the corrosion class you should use. For decking, i.e., horizontally mounted, pressure-treated boards outdoors, I would only use class A4, i.e., acid-resistant.

Okay, thanks for the response! Well, we live seven miles from the sea and the building will be oil stained. The question is whether the stain provides protection or not.

A little protection is probably provided by oil stain, especially if it is on a vertical surface (i.e. wall).

Yes, it should do that according to Jotun, I contacted them and they also advised to t-rödtvätta the screw heads so the stain adheres properly.
