Hi,
I have a question. I'm renovating a room on the upper floor built in the 1950s. All the wood is bone-dry, but there has been inadequate ventilation and heating in the past. I've had good heating since 2005 in this room. Adding some ventilation now. The wallboards have been covered with old dense wood fiberboard or plasterboard in all corners.
Some boards, somewhat randomly placed against the exterior wall, seem to have black mold on them. When I saw through a board (see picture), you can see how there are traces of black all the way through the board through the growth rings. More black on the inside of the room than the backside of the board.

The plan is to cover the walls with vertical wall panels MOELVEN Character white spruce 14x12.

My question is, should I spend time and money replacing the wallboards or just nail up the panels?

Grateful for advice!
/Thomas

  • Wooden interior wall showing raw planks with visible mold and insulation, accompanied by an electrical conduit and a circular air vent.
Let it sit. Maybe a thicker rule to get a little more air gap.
