I have an old veranda that used to have beadboard as cladding, with the back side of the beadboard as the exterior. I'm now thinking of first installing some kind of wood panel as the exterior, and then beadboard on the inside of it, so the beadboard is not exposed to weather and wind on the outside.

What type of wood panel should I choose? Plywood? And if so, which type?

The panel will then be painted with oil paint.

I would appreciate some help!

You can use exterior-bonded plywood. It is the only wood-based sheet material I know that is suitable for the task.
