I want to build a small shelter for two people. The budget is limited, and it just needs to last about five years. The shelter will be located in a protected area in a forest in Stockholm.

I've drawn up a CAD design that seems reasonable, but I need help to review my design.
Can I remove anything? Will it withstand wind and snow load? Do I need diagonal bracing anywhere?
The studs in the drawing are all 45x95 mm. The floor area is 2x2 m and the height is 1.6 m.

  • 3D sketch of a small wooden shelter frame with dimensions and structural details, designed for short-term use in a forested area.
  • A digital CAD drawing of a small shelter frame made from 45x95 mm beams, designed for two people, showing an A-frame structure with a sloped roof.
  • 3D model of a small wooden shelter frame with beams measuring 45x95 mm, designed for two people, featuring a 2x2 m base and 1.6 m height.

The design is probably okay, I would personally simplify it further and remove the "screen" and extend the roof slope instead, replace 2*4 with regular spruce poles (or possibly 45*70 everywhere except the beam over the opening, which might be higher than 95 mm or something better than the cheapest c14)

I would also have let the roof continue straight ahead. In addition to making it simpler, you avoid some dripping in front of the opening when it rains.

We sleep partly in wind shelters, and of the four I found in the picture, all have a downward angle on the front.

What is the purpose of the downward tilt besides creating a water curtain when it rains?

If I were to guess, smaller opening for the wind and the rain doesn't reach as far in.

One can/should build a wall against the wind.

A rustic wooden shelter with an open front, located in a forested area, possibly used for building a wind barrier.

Might just be a Skåne thing then ;)

Thanks for the input! Regular granslanor, what is that?
So the cross beam above the opening should be more robust. Got it. New drawing in progress :-)

Partly protection against weather and partly maintaining a low profile. The municipality is not entirely informed about my plans to set up a wind shelter in their forest 😬

Mmm, but 2x2m doesn't give much leeway.
A gutter might be something? 😀

Common spruce poles, what are they?
Round trunks, if you're going to buy them you might need to look for fencing wood, but the natural approach when building a simple lean-to is to use materials from the site and not buy sawn and planed battens.

Then extend the roof one or one and a half meters in front of the opening.

Illegal logging is not something I recommend.

In my eyes, a construction of 2*4 would be more conspicuous than spruce poles.

No unauthorized logging planned 😊
But even if I were to get hold of spruce poles, they (probably) wouldn't provide tight walls, which a shelter needs.
But you're absolutely right. My structure will be conspicuous, so the hope is that even if it is discovered, it will seem so harmless that the discoverer will refrain from reporting it.
