I will use adjustable post supports for double joists in my deck project.

The round plate in the post support is not optimal for double joists, especially where I need to splice the joists over the post support.

Therefore, I plan to place a piece of steel 5x90x90 between the post support's plate and the joists.

Adjustable post holder with a round base and screws, used for deck construction projects, particularly for double beams.

It is not economically justifiable to use stainless steel, so I will use S235JR and anti-rust paint.

Will the support, the steel piece, rust away before the deck reaches its maximum lifespan?

how long is a piece of string?

No. Your steel piece will last longer than your deck.

Car sheet metal doesn't disappear in seconds... and it's only a few millimeters thick.

Thicker steel pieces take a long time to disappear.

Thank you for a very insightful comment.

What information is missing to answer the question?

Lifespan of a deck 25-30 years

The deck is located near the coast in Stockholm

Critical, in my mindset, is when the steel piece can no longer support the bearer beam over the support.

actually, everything is missing to be able to answer the question.
climate, temperature differences, salts/air pollution.
paint quality, prep work before painting, etc.

summarized, it's probably just as easy to answer how long a piece of string is.

The simple answer is to go with acid-resistant if you are worried.

1) Stockholm archipelago

2) I'm thinking of buying a can of rust protection paint at Biltema and painting it on.

If it is not constantly washed over by saltwater, it should do well.

It will probably rust a little when the zinc paint gives in, but for it to corrode to the point that one would need to worry about the strength of a relatively protected steel piece is an overstatement.

Do I need to do any prep work, like sanding, before painting?

Of course, you should not use stainless steel together with hot-dip galvanized if that's what you mean.

Use S235JR and apply cold galvanizing, it will last for a loooong time.

Sorry darling you need to elaborate, I'm completely rudis on this.

However, I've got a price on a 6m piece of flat bar (S235JR) and was thinking of rust-proofing it (if necessary).

You should not mix stainless with non-stainless of any kind. That is the most important thing.

For example, do not use stainless screws with fittings in "regular" steel, or vice versa.

Is the flat bar just going to be like a shim washer, am I getting that right? Thickness of the flat bar?

Oh damn, I used stainless anchor screws in my galvanized post shoes.

But S235JR and a primer plus paint from Biltema should work then.

Yes like a shim washer. I buy a piece of 6 meters (5x90) and cut it into pieces of 100mm. So one piece becomes 5x90x100, i.e., 5mm thick.

Rust protection = primer for steel + topcoat.
If you only use primer, save the money for something else ;)

If it's easy to change, I would switch the screw to hot-dip galvanized, fzv.
