We are planning to widen a door by about 1 m in our house, which is built with horizontal timber (including the interior walls). I believe such reinforcement is quite important. I would use high-quality construction timber. If you then glue and screw the so-called sword, the effect will be similar to that of laminated timber, but easier to execute.
