We are planning to widen a door by about 1 m in our house, which is built with horizontal timber (including the interior walls). I talked to a structural engineer who says it's okay as long as the sill and the overlying log are intact, but I am still considering reinforcing the sides of the new opening according to this construction: https://svenska.yle.fi/artikel/2011/10/16/gardshuset-montera-dorr-1-forstarka-dorroppning (i.e., no new overlying beam).
What is the best material for the reinforcement? Glulam?
I believe such reinforcement is quite important. I would use high-quality construction timber. If you then glue and screw the so-called sword, the effect will be similar to that of laminated timber, but easier to execute.
