What happens with fix or fog that has been stored for too long before use? I understand that milk sours after the best-before date. But fix? Any chemist on the forum who can explain?

It depends on exactly what kind of product it is. That is, what components it consists of. How it is packaged. And how it is stored.

For example, if moisture from the surrounding air enters the packaging, it can simply harden. But as mentioned, there are so many different products and so many different explanations that it is not possible to give a general answer.

If it's dry mortar, it lasts almost indefinitely if it's packaged airtight. However, a chrome-reducing agent is added to cement products, and that agent degrades over time. Since there are limit values for how much chromium concrete workers can be exposed to, there is a best-before date on the products. But if you don't work regularly with cement products, there's no significant risk in using them after the expiration date.

I have some grout that has been in an opened bag in the basement for five years. I need to fill in some joints, and the penny-pincher in me thought I could avoid buying a new bag for just a few meters of grout. I'll give it a try and see if it sets.

Five-year-old grout didn't cure very well. Have to bite the bullet and spend 150 kronor on new grout. Buuuuäääh 😭
