Yes, my partner and I are going to expand the driveway a bit to make room for both cars. It's simply too much hassle to only fit one, and we thought we'd dig 35 cm, fill with base layer and compact it, sand and stone, and joint, etc. You probably know, but after checking the price of the base layer, we felt it was crazy expensive and thought as follows.
- Remove the old tiles and smooth it out nicely.
- Throw on landscape fabric, some setting sand, lay the stones, and joint them, and leave it at that.
And then next summer, lift the stones, dig out, and do everything by the book. The reason is that we can't really wait on the driveway, but we also need to save money for a fireplace so we don't freeze our butts off this winter and save throughout the year to do everything properly next year. Plus, I've won a gift card for a building store that would cover almost all the stone, so it wouldn't cost much to "cheat" and do it this way.
So the question is, can we skip the base layer for a year? And what’s the worst that can happen if we do this? There are tiles there now, so the ground should be hard-packed since it's held up for 40 years without issue.

It concerns about 30 sqm, enough for two cars. 7 meters wide and 5 meters to the gate and a small bit of "walkway" yes I would have liked to do that too but the problem is that we need to save for a fireplace and we will have managed to do that just in time for autumn unfortunately we can't set aside more money at the moment. But what’s the worst that can happen if you ignore the Base layer for a year?
The existing location will probably hold if, as you say, it has held for the past 40 years. The uncertainty is the expansion area. What are the soil conditions there? I say SHOOT MAN, SHOOT! :wow: The worst that can happen, as mentioned, is that it becomes rutted and uneven and needs to be redone, which you are already accounting for. In the best case, it turns out that the ground holds perfectly well without a bearing layer, and then you've saved that money for something more fun. 
Why not do the opposite, i.e., wait with paving until you can afford it. Spread out the sub-base and pack it together. It's perfectly fine to park on, it's the same surface as a gravel road. Next year you'll also have a well-packed base to pave on.
What kind of money are we talking about for bärlager?
I would guess the ground conditions on the expansion area are the same, it's located right next to the old one, however, it's 7-8 cm higher and has a lawn, but we plan to scale it down and flatten it with a tractor. YES, but I felt a bit like "yes, it will be redone anyway" yes it would be the best if it holds up nicely without anything at all =)
For the simple reason that since it should be level with the asphalt outside, 5 cm of sand needs to be laid first and then the stones, and if we just bring the base layer, the car will drop 5 cm every time you drive in. Sure, you could probably fill up anyway and maybe remove what hasn't been packed next year, but the other reason is money; I've won a gift card for the hardware store for the stones, and they don't sell the gravel =/fn76 said:

To improperly lay stone only to redo it properly a year later is a huge waste of time. Can't you just park the car there as it is and save the gift card? Or buy something else you need for the house, or maybe even materials for the stove (smokestack and similar). Or if for some reason you have to buy the stone now - buy it and let it sit in the yard until you can finance the base layer.
Yes, you're probably right pelpet. I checked the gift card again and it lasts for 36 months, so we'll have to wait until next summer and do it properly then =) and also take the opportunity to do it once and build a "cyckelhus" =)
