I'm now putting myself on the "renovation for dummies" level and asking about what might be obvious.

I'm planning a complete renovation and I'm confused about the best order in which to carry out the work. Some tasks can probably be done anytime, while others must/should really be done in a certain order.

What needs to be done is:
- Reroofing, including some sheet metal work around penetrations
- Replace boards covering the roof eaves
- New gutters
- New downspouts
- Additional insulation for the exterior facade
- Additional insulation in the attic
- New windows and doors
- Replaster the facade
- Redo drainage
- Replace plumbing/sewer in the house
- Install new electrical wiring and conduits
- Demolish some (non-load bearing) interior walls and build new ones
- New heating system (Probably geothermal. Currently electric water heating.)

I think that's everything... Then all indoor surfaces need to be fixed as well, but I guess that's done last. Can some kind soul suggest an order of operations and which things are independent of the rest?

Start with the dirtiest, toughest, and most important tasks, I think. Then from top to bottom.

Either drainage, the roof, or the facade first. If you drain first, you might encounter issues with the ground being loose where you need scaffolding for the facade (if you need it). But if six months pass in between, there’s no problem draining first.

If the windows are being replaced, it’s suitable to do that in conjunction with changing the facade.

You need gutters and downspouts, but it’s simpler to install them after the new facade is painted.

Indoor insulation, electricity, and plumbing can be done whenever. If you're living in the house at the same time, you might have to do a little at a time there.

We’re working our way through your list and have done it like this:

Drainage (+ digging for the extension)
Build the extension including preparing for electricity and plumbing in it
Add insulation and change the facade on the old house
Renovate the old windows
(Our roof is OK)
Break up and insulate the floor in the (old) basement, install floor heating + pour new concrete
Demolish what needs tearing down inside (kitchen, bathroom, walls)
Insulate the ceiling inside
Build a fireplace
(This is about where we are now)
Frame new walls inside
Install electricity, plumbing, heating, central vacuum system, and ventilation (We’re also replacing all heating pipes but keeping the boiler and some of the old radiators)
Install boards on walls and ceiling inside
Build kitchen and bathroom
Paint and wallpaper

We’re doing as much as we can ourselves, not yet living in the house, and have been working on it for almost two years now.
