I need to fill a gap of 55 mm and was thinking of doing this with some moderately elastic foam - like backing rod. Since the gap is about 55 mm, you probably need something at least 60 mm wide to wedge it in. I can't find any backing rod or similar that's that wide. Additionally, I want something rectangular, not round like some backing rods. Styrofoam isn't elastic enough to be pressed into the gap. Do you have any tips on where I can buy sufficiently large pieces of the right kind of material?

Cut-off list for leveling compound - available in 30x30 and 40x50.

Could that be something!?

Nah, it's narrower than 55 mm so it won't fill the gap. Additionally, I was thinking of something a bit stiffer - think old school sleeping pad. Thanks anyway for the suggestion :)

Any company that sews cushions for caravans or boats, alternatively someone who upholsters furniture.

Foam rubber can be found in various places, at Jysk, Classe, or your local fabric/remnant store.

Take two then?

I would preferably like something with closed cells so that it doesn't absorb moisture and dirt. Therefore, I'm hesitant to buy regular foam rubber, but that's probably where I'll end up if I don't find something else.

Why isn't expanding foam good enough?
Feels easier

I know, I've thought about that too. The catch is that I want to be able to remove it relatively easily.

We have ordered foam for seat cushions from this company. They have most things related to foam, including very compact variants. Custom sizing is also available.

If you can disregard the requirement for right angles, pipe insulation might work.

You can use foam sealant in a garbage bag, fills well and can be removed.

I have used camping mats as insulation. It was (1 year ago) a rather thick type from Biltema, 149 kr for a roll.

By chance, I later discovered that this material can be glued with hot glue! (which does not work with pipe insulation). Whether this works with other camping mats, I don't know yet. (I'm still wondering if it might be EVA plastic, which makes it work.)

Maybe you, thompo, could use that material? If we imagine that you cut strips and glue them together?
They are closed cells anyway, so they don't absorb liquid.
