I'm currently sketching a coffee table that I plan to assemble. For this, I need suitable panel material. I've been looking at 18mm joinery plywood with a finer knot-free surface than regular plywood. This was at Silvan. Does anyone have other ideas on where to find good plywood, preferably thicker? The idea is to stain or lacquer the surface.

Not completely sure but MDF é a good material to paint on...

Check with a carpenter shop, it will probably not be more expensive than a building supply store and you will almost certainly get better quality.

If you're going to paint, you might as well go with MDF, but it will be a bit heavier than plywood.

Why not have an mdf board or something similar at the bottom and then a thinner plywood board on top?
Then maybe make a wooden frame around it to disguise that it's not solid wood all the way through?

It's an idea that has occurred to me as well.. I'm leaning towards that solution... As long as I maintain the basic concept... We'll see.. ;-)
