Hello, not sure if this is the right subforum (feel free to move it if it fits better elsewhere).

My consideration/question is this.

We will eventually renovate our laundry room, and currently, it looks something like this:

The laundry room features rough stone walls, a sink, a washing machine, a dryer, and supplies on top. The walls are partly crumbling, with visible gaps.

The room is significantly larger than what is visible in the picture, but I think you get the idea. The wall material is "boulders" (the outside plastered and painted), and they seem to have used some plaster/concrete/lime mixture to try to smooth out the walls/seams between the stones a bit... and a cast slab on the floor...

But unfortunately, it has started to peel off and crack in places - and it's not very pretty...

So there are two different ways to do a renovation, I suppose...

1. Build a new wall with the right material...
2. Knock it all down and replaster...

...and this is where my consideration comes in!

If I were to create a completely new wall in front (according to best practices), do I need to do something about the joints/plaster/stones behind, to begin with?

I assume more "plaster" will fall over time? Could holes there create a later problem? (e.g., mice getting in? I've seen a small "gravel/sand pile" at the bottom in some places... where there are also holes between the stones...)

IF I were to choose option 2, to knock it all down. How should one go about it then? How much should be knocked away... and what do you do if it's tough to remove? (can you leave it if it is?) - and when rebuilding, should it be plastered/grouted/filled in layers then?? (quite large differences between the stones in places).

All thoughts are welcome (on one or both suggestions)

Hard to tell from the pictures, but it may be that a dense paint has been used, causing the plaster to detach because moisture in the wall cannot be ventilated out. Redoing it properly to get a completely flat wall is likely to require significant work and several layers of plaster.

I’m not a basement expert, but my instinct is to vote for metal studs and moisture-resistant drywall. Over time, some plaster will probably fall off the back, but it is unlikely to create any holes in the wall.
 
In the pictures here, I can tell that it is hmm.. a basement.. but completely above ground there (maybe a few dm, at the bottom on some sides of the room, that are below ground). The exterior of the house is "smooth plastered" and painted with a color meant for that purpose (I believe we found a can of black "brick paint" somewhere when we moved in). There are some cracks on the outside too, but nothing unusual.

I also think it seems like a lot of plastering if you're going to redo everything (as I said, it's not a small room). But that's why I was wondering a bit about whether you still had to address the wall in some way.. before building a new one in front.

Maybe it's enough to patch up what's damaged/holes?

We have metal studs down in the room already and moisture-resistant drywall.. from the previous owner (we bought some things in the outbuildings..) - but I'm a bit tempted by a board wall (horizontal..). I wonder how to do that in the best way.. and should we insulate.. or not..?
