What screw for mounting hook hinges?

Planning to buy long 100cm strap hinges for a heavy gate. There's plenty of timber for the screw to grip.

But wondering if one should settle for self-tapping screws.

Or perhaps carriage bolts with washers and nuts on the inside.

Now, I have admittedly not been to the store, but Jula's website only mentions that

Galvanized steel with a pin diameter of 13 mm. Complete with hook.

So I assumed it was without screws.

complete with hook I interpret with screws, otherwise it wouldn't be complete.

The farm screws are well designed for fastening metal sheets to wood, with drill tips, but they don't perform particularly well. Pre-drilling is always beneficial, but the drill tip on the screws is too large, as it is mainly intended for making holes in the metal sheets.

Use regular wood screws, pre-drilling 1 mm smaller than the core of the screw.

For example, if the screw is 6.3 mm across the threads and the core is 5 mm, drill 4 mm for optimal fastening. For harder woods like oak, drill to the same size as the core and lubricate the screws with grease.

It depends a bit on the weight and number of hinges, but a through bolt is optimal. Farmarskruv is definitely too weak. Better then with relatively long but rather weak franskskruvar.

farmarskruv is, as mentioned, sheet metal roofing screws with a rubber gasket... it was definitely French wood screw TS meant...

Oh, yes, that's correct. I was thinking of fransk träskruv.

My hinges are (almost) held in with farmarskruv. It's not a good idea.

(It wasn't me who screwed in the hinges)
