Anyone recognize the material in the pictures? These are the interior walls of a summer cottage built in 1975.

Could it be tretex?

  • A hand holding a piece of building material with staples, questioning if it's Tretex used in inner walls of a 1975 summer cottage.
  • Close-up of a hand holding a piece of fibrous material, possibly fiberboard or tretex, against the background of a woven mat and a wall corner.

So not "soft soft," but definitely softer than something like a chipboard if I were to compare it to something 😄

We've screwed things into it and so on, so it's quite sturdy. Could it still be treetex?

Yes.

I think it looks like treetex.

That looks like building board from the 70s, a cross between Treetex and masonite.
I have those in all the walls of my house from 1979.
!2-13 mm thick.

I just saw that it was built in 1975, I seem to recall the treetex factory shut down ~1970...anyway, treetex-like boards have existed since then.
Adjusting the answer to "treetex-like porous wood fiberboard". 😉

Thank you for your answers! The reason I'm asking is because we have a problem with a musty smell that I can't trace, it clings to clothes, etc. It's in all the rooms.

I'm wondering if this material could be the culprit?

I would first suspect possible moisture, sills, and possible glue that can react and emit a horse/stable-like smell, but in a summer house, it can be a bit difficult as mentioned.

What you have is building board and we have the same in our villa. Doesn't smell but of course, it depends on if it has been exposed to smoking or similar.
